Polish Food Tour
Traditional Polish cuisine might be a calories bomb, but once you try it, you will not be able to resist the temptation. One thing I can tell you for sure, Polish cuisine is pretty much like pierogi – at first it doesn’t seem very special but when you try it you can’t get enough. It is rich in various kinds of meat (pork, chicken, beef) and famous for its excellent bread and delicious sausages.
If you will be interested in tasting polish meals then I’ll organise a Food Tour for you and we will visit local eateries so you will be able to immerse your taste buds in this craziness of delicious flavours!
Here are my top 10 best Polish foods made according to traditional recipes:
1)Pierogi (Polish dumplings)
Dumplings are made of thinly rolled-out dough filled with a variety of fillings. Pierogi are served in a variety of flavours thanks to different kinds of filling inside the dough. The most common ones are the ones with cabbage & wild mushroom, meat and potato & white cheese filling. As well in some regions of Poland you can try pierogi with fruits like forest fruits, strawberries or cherries served with cream and sugar. Pierogi is a Polish food that’s always served for Christmas.
2)Placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes)
A thin pancake made with grated onion, carrot, parsnips or other vegetables. Delicious served hot either sprinkled with sugar or dolloped with sour cream
3)Rosół (broth/chicken soup)
Rosół is the most common soup served in Poland. It is very easy and quick to prepare, commonly served with homemade noodles. The ingredients needed for the soup are water, any piece of chicken, onion, small leek, onion, green celery, parsley, cabbage, salt and pepper.
4)Żurek
A popular sour soup with pieces of sausage, potatoes and eggs served in a bread bowl that you can eat as well.
5)Barszcz (betroot soup)
Another interesting soup is barszcz, soup made from beetroots. There are a few different types of barszcz, but the most popular are two types: betroot soup as a bullion and barszcz with plenty of vegetables, potatoes and beans. Both are great and very healthy.
6)Gołąbki (cabbage roll)
Another interesting dish is called gołąbki. Literally the name means pigeons but don’t worry, it doesn’t have any pigeon in it! Gołąbki are made with pork or beef mince and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves. The are served with potatoes and a tomato sauce. There are a few vegetarian variations of this dish that instead of meat use bulgur and wild mushroom or potatoes and white cheese
There are also other variations of fillings such as poultry, mutton or without meat. Before serving cabbage are simmered /fried in fat.
7)Łazanki z kapustą i grzybami
It is a very simple dish consisting cabbage, pork meat, homemade pasta noodles and vegetables (chopped onions and sliced carrot). It is delicious and easy to make.
8)Bigos (cabbage stew)
It is a very traditional Polish dish and its basic ingredients are shreds sauerkraut, fresh cabbage (sometimes used only sauerkraut), various types of meat and sausages, dried mushrooms, prunes, onions and spices.
9)Kotlet schabowy (breaded pork cutlet)
Kotlet schabowy is one of the most delicious and the oldest Polish foods. The pork breaded cutlet coated with breadcrumbs (served with bones or without) can be perfectly served with buttered potatoes and cabbage salad. If you don’t like pork meat, try to eat chicken cutlet made the same way as the pork one.
10)Gulasz (Goulash)
This dish is originally from Hungary, but the Polish recipe has been slightly changed. It is a stew of meat served with potatoes and vegetables, seasoned with friend onion and peppers.
